Our founder recently spoke with 6PR about our Perth trial.
How does it work?
Participating individuals and businesses will be encouraged to collect cigarette butts – either from ashtrays, dedicated infrastructure, or from litter in their area – and instead of putting them in to the bin, they would put them the provided snap-locked bags, trapping in any nasty smells. Once all the provided ‘butt pouches’ have been filled, they will tie off the compostable box liner, seal the recycled box with the provided bio-tape and then scan the dedicated QR code on the box. This will trigger us to collect it from them. Once collected, we will consolidate and then remediate the butts and other materials with our mycologist partner, Fungi Solutions. Fungi Solutions have cultivated a strain of oyster mushroom that digests not only the plastic filters, but can cope with the toxins present also.
Our aim is that at the end of the program, we have a proof-of-concept of the ability to use these remediated cigarette butts as part of the circular economy.
How much does it cost?
This trial is being funded as part of the Community Litter Grants from Keep Australia Beautiful Council WA, with additional funding from No More Butts. As such, there is no cost for participants.
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We recognise they have cared and maintained the beautiful environment for time immemorial. We would like to pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all Indigenous communities.
